Supreme Court hearing in Kolkata rape and murder case live updates: No action against doctors; CJI rejects PM's resignation plea

Supreme Court hearing live updates in Kolkata rape and murder case: The Supreme Court bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud began hearing the case shortly after 10:30 am.

Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, told the Supreme Court that there would be no “punitive action” against the doctors who did not report for work.

The Supreme Court ordered the Bengal government to strengthen security measures within two weeks, including installing CCTV cameras and providing proper toilets for the doctors. The Supreme Court criticised the Ratirer Sathi scheme and also criticised the Bengal government's hiring of contractual staff to assist the doctors.

Earlier, the CJI had rejected Kapil Sibal's request to stop the live broadcast of the hearing, saying it was done on public demand. Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, alleged that the live stream would damage the reputation of the lawyers and that women had been threatened.

“Women are threatened in my office and then there are posts about my laughter. When did I laugh? They say they are being thrown acid and raped, etc. That's what people on the ground are saying,” said Sibal.

So far, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will accept most of the five-point demand after her meeting with the junior doctors on September 15, 2024.

Mamata Banerjee has also ordered the dismissal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal after 4 pm today. She has also relieved the Director of Medical Education (DME), Director of Health Services (DHS) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Division) from their respective posts. “We will announce the name of the new Commissioner of Police after 4 pm on Tuesday after the scheduled hearing in the Supreme Court is over,” PTI quoted the West Bengal Chief Minister as saying.
