11-year-old boy rescued after being trapped between boulders for 9 hours

An 11-year-old boy from New Hampshire was rescued after being trapped between two boulders for several hours.

Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Services responded to a report that a boy was trapped between two boulders at Camp Wediko in Windsor around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, according to WHDH-TV, Boston 25 News and the New York Post.

In a statement provided to Boston 25 News and WHDH-TV, fire officials said when firefighters arrived, they found the child pinned in a crevice between two boulders before “the incident rapidly escalated.”

The Hillsboro Fire and EMS Department described the rescue operation as a “technical one” in an update on Facebook and said it lasted all “night” and “into the early hours of the morning.” Authorities also thanked several of their “assistance agencies,” including the Concord, Washington and Manchester departments, for their help.

Manchester Fire Battalion Chief Jon Fosher told the post that firefighters were unable to move or chip away the boulders, so they ultimately had to dig him out from between the boulders.

“We basically had to dig a tunnel under the boulder to get to the child's feet so we had something to push from underneath,” Fosher said.

The Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Department also posted a photo of the rescue operation on Facebook, showing several fire trucks and rescue vehicles and related equipment, including large lights, ladders and toolboxes spread out on the ground.

The department told local media that after working all night, they were finally able to free the boy at around 3:16 a.m. on Monday morning, September 16. The child was then taken to a nearby hospital. Firefighters finally cleared the area at around 4:30 a.m.

Hillsboro Fire and EMS and Camp Wediko did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Wediko, a residential treatment center the boy attended, said in a statement post that “a student exploring a rocky area on campus under supervision slipped between two boulders when sticks and debris gave way underneath.”

The school continued: “Despite efforts by several staff members to free the student, they were unsuccessful and immediately called local emergency services. Emergency services worked tirelessly throughout the night and were able to successfully rescue the student early in the morning.”
