A Bengaluru resident from Uttarakhand earned praise for translating safety instructions into Kannada, sparking a conversation on X.

In a heartwarming gesture, a non-Kannadiga citizen from Bengaluru in the state of Uttarakhand used Google Translate to translate safety instructions into Kannada and then wrapped a broken glass so that the paurakarmikas – the city’s garbage men – would not risk injury while disposing of the garbage.

With this gesture, a resident of Bengaluru warned Pourakarmikas about a broken glass. (X/@suchi_a)

The person's friend shared the incident on X (formerly Twitter), sparking another discussion about regional languages. “I guess that's all non-Hindi speaking states ask for. Respect our language and treat it as equal to yours. Non-Hindi speaking states don't expect you to speak Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi or Bengali when visiting, working or living in Hindi speaking states,” the user wrote on the platform.

Answers from X users

Several Kannadiga X users appreciated the “considerate” gesture but said that they expect this from non-Kannadigas as well and that it was not very difficult to adjust.

Another user replied to the post, “Please get over this inferiority complex towards Hindi… it's just a language. Nobody disrespects Kannada, Tamil or Marathi. It's just a product of your imagination born out of an inferiority complex, that's all.”

The post received over 500 likes and 100 reposts, was well received on social media and reignited discussions about linguistic diversity.

Recently, a woman from Bengaluru courted controversy on social media when she expressed her displeasure over her Swiggy delivery guy not being able to speak Kannada. Sharing a screenshot of her order, the woman wrote, “Bengaluru is in Karnataka or Pakistan @swiggy? Your delivery guy doesn't speak or understand Kannada or English. Do you expect us to learn Hindi, the national language of the country in our country? Stop forcing us to do things and make sure your delivery guys know Kannada.”
