Liverpool injury update: Latest news and return dates for Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott

Liverpool have only two fitness issues ahead of a busy week.

The Reds travel to Italy to face AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night before hosting Bournemouth at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

Arne Slot is looking to get the season back on track after losing his first game as Liverpool manager 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest.

Injury-plagued Alexis Mac Allister started the game against Forest, with Curtis Jones making his first appearance of the season in the second half.

Here is a look at the latest Liverpool injury news

Federico Chiesa

Chiesa was not deemed fit enough to be included in Liverpool's squad for the Forest game following his £12.5million move from Juventus last month.

The winger has not played yet this season and was not called up to the squad for Italy's recent Nations League victories against France and Israel.

Chiesa is being slowly integrated into Liverpool as he regains his fitness. Slot said last week: “Federico has trained with the team three or four times now, so let's see how he does today and what decision I make because we have more than 20 players for one position.”

“I choose those who are fittest at the moment.”

Possible return match date: Tuesday, 17 September, against AC Milan

Harvey Elliott

Elliot may be out until the end of October after sustaining a foot injury while playing for England's Under-21 team.

The midfielder made his only appearance for the Reds this season as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Brentford last month.

Liverpool head coach Slot said: “Harvey is obviously a big disappointment for him, but not only for him, but also for us because, OK, he didn't play that much in the first three games, but in pre-season he played a lot and did really well. If he had stayed fit, he would of course have got a lot of playing time in the coming games.

“But now he is not [fit] and that gives someone else a chance as well. So it's a blow to himself first and foremost and then to us as well because I think availability is important at this stage of the season when we're playing seven games in 22 days, I think.

“This is a big blow for both of us, but he will work as hard as ever to come back as best he can. Unfortunately, he has not stayed fit and will therefore be out for a long time.”
