38-year-old identified as man killed in Harrisburg shooting

A 38-year-old man was shot and killed in Harrisburg on Friday, authorities confirmed to PennLive.

Thomas Davenport of Harrisburg was shot to death in his home in the first block of North 14th Street shortly before 5 p.m., according to District Attorney Fran Chardo. Police said they arrived at the scene to find Davenport's body surrounded by family members.

The shooting sparked an hours-long search for the gunman at 58 North 14th St., the duplex where Davenport was found, and the house next door. The gunman was still at large Saturday.

“I don't know what happened. It was my son. He was killed,” a woman named Mary told PennLive when reached Saturday. “That's all I know. Other than that, I don't know anything. All I know is that my son is dead.”

She said her son lived with his grandmother in the duplex but declined to provide further details or identify herself. It is unclear how long Davenport lived there.

The Dauphin County Crisis Response Team (CRT) responded to the shooting Friday evening, as did officers from the Harrisburg Bureau of Police, Pennsylvania Capitol Police and Susquehanna Township Police Department.

The victim's family members were evacuated from 58 North 14th St. The CRT assisted police in clearing the second and third floors of the house and the house next door. Neighbors said they were unable to enter their homes for about five hours.

CRT officers searched the two houses slowly and systematically, but no one was inside. Officers went in and out of the two houses until after 9pm Friday evening.

Several snipers were stationed around the house while police confirmed the shooter was not inside. The CRT used a drone, non-lethal ammunition and smoke in its search efforts.

Harrisburg Police Chief Thomas Carter confirmed that it was not a standoff and that police were taking precautionary measures because they were not sure if the shooter was still in the house.

As of Saturday, the shooter had not been publicly identified. Davenport's killing was the 17th in Harrisburg in 2024.
