Florida woman arrested for attempted fraud at Wolcott Bank

WOLCOTT, CT (WFSB) – A Florida woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon after attempting to commit fraud at a Wolcott bank.

Officers responded to the Thomaston Savings Bank at 669 Wolcott Road at approximately 2:18 p.m. on reports of fraudulent activity.

The suspect, 52-year-old Marie Butts from Florida, is said to have attempted to access a customer's account and withdraw money using a fake passport.

The bank employees were already aware of Butts' previous attempt to commit a similar fraud at the Oakville branch that same day, where she had been denied service.

After leaving the Wolcott Bank on foot, Butts was observed attempting to elude police.

Members of the patrol and criminal police managed to locate and arrest Butts.

When she was arrested, the fake passport was confiscated.

Butts is charged with, among other things, identity fraud, second-degree forgery, attempted first-degree larceny, and first-degree identity theft.

She is being held on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on September 12, 2024.

This incident is part of a pattern involving Butts, who has previously been arrested under various aliases for similar offenses.
