Rams surprisingly re-sign free agent CB to strengthen secondary

The Los Angeles Rams have signed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. Los Angeles had Witherspoon last season and brought him back to bolster the depth of their secondary overall.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz released the news of the signing on social media.

Witherspoon spent last season with the Rams, recording 52 total tackles and three interceptions in 17 games. It was his best season of his career, and he now gets another chance to show what he can do in Los Angeles.

The Rams have been hit hard by injuries this season, so the signing of Witherspoon is necessary. They have already lost cornerback Derion Kendrick to a torn ACL and Darious Williams will miss at least three more games due to injury.

Los Angeles' depth, particularly at the cornerback position, was put to the test in its opening game against the Los Angeles Rams. Detroit tried to test its young cornerbacks all night, but was able to hold its own for the most part.

Signing a player like Witherspoon should give the Rams another option to work with alongside veteran Tre'Davious White. His presence should be felt in the secondary as he looks to pick up where he left off last season.

Witherspoon looked like a completely different player under the Rams' defensive system, and he will now have to learn a new playbook as Raheem Morris leaves the team to become head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

But in Los Angeles, many of the same plans are still in place, only now Chris Shula is in charge.

Witherspoon was originally drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers out of Colorado. He spent four seasons with the 49ers before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years. The veteran was also part of the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad in 2021, but never played in a game for them.

In addition to the injuries in the secondary, Los Angeles has also been hit hard on the offensive line. Several regular players will be out due to injury in the future.

Los Angeles also had to do without star wide receiver Puka Nacua for an extended period of time because of a knee injury. He was placed on the injured list earlier this week.
