Duisburg duo receives hate on the internet

Duisburg. Melanie Fydrich competes with Trouble in the RTL show “Top Dog Germany”. After two victories, the Duisburg native talks about goals – and hate on the internet.

They dare to do it again: The strong duo, Border Collie Trouble (9) and owner and dog trainer Melanie Fydrich from Duisburg, started again in the course at “Top Dog Germany”. The two will be on the RTL show on Friday, 13 September, from 8:15 p.m. This is their fourth participation. They have already won the TV competition twice and came third the third time.

Melanie Fydrich says: “We weren't even sure if we would be allowed to compete again. But we are now part of the top dog community and it's nice to have familiar faces there too.”

She only found out very late that RTL had invited her. “That's why I didn't have time to practice much with Trouble.” Other participants had more time.”

At least the dog trainer was able to improvise a little at home in Neumühl. For Trouble, who was still eight years old when filming, Melanie Fydrich converted one of her daughter's play tunnels, filled it with paper – and the animal immediately ran through it. “It's just incredibly nice to see that my dog trusts me so much and does everything I say.” Trouble knows that I mean well by her. “She just runs off when I give her a command,” says the 36-year-old.

This time, the TV format is structured a little differently; with two runs and two courses to qualify for the final. There are also seven spectacular obstacles. Another new feature is that the top dog candidates have to use tactics: do they take the riskier route or play it safe? In the end, it is the human who decides. But a wrong decision costs valuable time.

Courage to leave gaps

“This time I played Courage to the Gap and was simply lucky that Trouble is an incredibly talented dog,” says Melanie Fydrich, who was still practicing with Trouble behind the scenes in the training area.

And something else was different this time. “This year my husband and I traveled to the show alone with Trouble and we left the children at home so that we could concentrate completely on ourselves,” says the mother of two children. “For us, it was also quality time with Trouble, who is already nine years old.”

The pressure is enormous. “But I worked a lot on it with my husband.” “He's a sports mental trainer and prepared me very well,” says Melanie Fydrich. “I just didn't want to blame myself. If I don't have time to train, it's not the dog's fault,” she says.

It was really fun to get involved. This time she was completely relaxed and was able to really enjoy the moment. She also said, however, “We're not the most popular team.” Hatred and envy are clearly evident on the Internet. Some people write, “Yes, if they're there, they'll win anyway.” That's nonsense, of course.

Duo gets hate on the internet

“I think it's a real shame that the Internet makes people be so mean.” Melanie Fydrich has already written to a user and invited her to get to know her. She accepted the offer. “She was totally surprised and is now even at my dog training school,” says the Duisburg resident.

Also interesting

She says: “I am a mother of two children, and my husband and I both have full-time jobs.” I can't always train with Trouble. They say you are often your own worst customer.”

In four preliminary round shows, the participants will compete for a place in the grand finale – and for 5,000 euros, which each daily winner can take home, and 1,000 euros of which will be donated to an animal welfare organization of their choice.
In the grand finale, there is prize money of 25,000 euros, of which 5,000 euros will go to an animal welfare organization of your choice.
The two best-placed small dogs in all preliminary rounds also advance to the final and have the chance to win the “Last Shorty Standing” award and 5,000 euros, of which 1,000 euros will go to a good cause.
