Moeen Ali believes Brendon McCullum helps Jos Buttler get the best out of him

London [UK]September 11 (ANI): Former England cricketer Moeen Ali said that head coach Brendon McCullum would help white-ball captain Jos Buttler get the best out of him.

Moeen, who last played for England in the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, announced his retirement from the international game on Sunday. Moeen believed the time was right for him after learning that he was no longer being considered for future assignments for the team.

Phil Salt will lead England in the upcoming T20I series against Australia as Jos Buttler has suffered a calf injury. Buttler's injury also makes his participation in the subsequent five-match ODI series uncertain.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moeen said McCullum could bring the kind of energy to the world that would help Buttler in particular.

“I think Brendon is helped by the fact that he's been there, been through everything and the way he's played. I think it can be quite difficult when a coach says 'do this' but they've never done it. Brendon brings that kind of energy and I think that will be great for Jos more than anything,” Moeen was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

The former England batsman added that Buttler is under a lot of pressure in batting, wicketkeeping and as captain.

“Jos has so much to do with batting, wicket-keeping and captaincy. I think Brendon will just take the pressure off and he can just play and be captain on the field. Brendon will have more control I think,” he added.

The first T20I match will be played in Southampton on September 11. The second match will be played in Cardiff on September 13. The final match of the T20I series will be played in Manchester on September 15.
