Miami Dolphins demand “swift and decisive action” against police officers involved in Tyreek Hill incident before NFL game

MIAMI– The NFL franchise Miami Dolphins commented Monday night on the police traffic stop in which wide receiver Tyreek Hill was dragged from his vehicle, laid on the ground and handcuffed before Sunday's season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In its statement, the organization said it was “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent behavior toward” Hill on Sunday and called for “swift and decisive action against the officers involved in the incident.”

Hill was arrested and handcuffed to the ground after being stopped on his way to Hard Rock Stadium around 10:20 a.m. ET on Sunday.

“It is both unbearable and heartbreaking to see the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary violence and hostility toward these players,” the Dolphins organization said.

The team's statement followed the release of bodycam footage of the incident by Miami-Dade police on Monday evening.

In the footage reviewed by ABC News, a motorcycle officer flags Hill down and approaches the driver's side window. Hill rolls down the window and tells the officer to stop knocking on the window.

Hill then asks for his ticket, tells the cop that he will be late, and then rolls the car window back up.

The officer tells the wide receiver to roll down the window, and Hill opens it a crack. The officer then tells Hill, “Get out of the car right now. We're not playing this game.”

As Hill opens the door, newly released footage shows the officer grabbing Hill's hand and placing it behind Hill's head. The officer then appears to pull Hill out of the car.

In the videos, the officer can be seen pinning Hill face down to the ground with two other officers helping him. One officer presses his knee on Hill's back until Hill is handcuffed, as can be seen in the videos.

About six minutes into the incident, body camera footage shows an officer looking at Hill's identification and can be heard saying, “You know who that is, right?”

The first official said he didn't know, and then he was told Hill was one of the Dolphins' star players.

In a statement from Hill's attorney Julius B. Collins describing the incident, Collins said Hill “rolled down his window and the officer then ordered Mr. Hill to exit the vehicle, even though Mr. Hill complied with the officer's request to keep his window closed.”

Collins said in his statement: “Hill rolled down his window each time he was instructed to do so by officers.” He called the officers' actions “excessive” and said they would explore all legal options.

“We believe the matter escalated because overzealous officers attempted to impose their authority on Mr. Hill because they were not satisfied with how quickly he complied with their request and because Mr. Hill did not roll his window down far enough for their liking,” he added.

When asked about the incident after the game, Hill told reporters, “I wasn't disrespectful… because my mother didn't raise me that way, she didn't swear, nothing like that.”

South Florida Police Benevolent Association President Steadman Stahl issued a statement Monday saying Hill's refusal to cooperate with officers led to his detention.

“He was briefly detained for safety reasons after driving in a manner that placed himself and others in grave danger,” Stahl said. “After being stopped, Mr. Hill did not immediately cooperate with officers on scene, who handcuffed Mr. Hill as per protocol and for their immediate safety.”

Stephanie V. Daniels, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, said Monday in a statement that included body camera footage that the “department is committed to conducting a thorough and objective investigation into this matter.”

“We will continue to keep the public informed of the outcome of this process,” Daniels said.

Daniels also said that one of the officers involved had been assigned “administrative duties.”
