Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson pleads not guilty to 18 counts of historical sex offences

Former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of historical sexual offences.

His wife and co-defendant Lady Donaldson, 58, of Dublinhill Road, Dromore, also pleaded not guilty to three charges when her indictment was read out at Newry Crown Court on Tuesday.

It was their first appearance before the Crown Court, having previously appeared twice before the Justice of the Peace.

The date agreed for the negotiations was March 24 next year.

During his brief court appearance, 61-year-old Donaldson stood up and said “not guilty” as the charges were read to him.

He is accused of one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency and 13 counts of sexual assault.

The charges cover a period between 1985 and 2008.

Eleanor Donaldson is accused of aiding and abetting in connection with the alleged crimes.

When Donaldson arrived at Newry Courthouse, there was a significant police presence.
