Muskingum man's appeal denied after conviction for rape and life sentence

DRESDEN – The appeal of 42-year-old Jason G. Newlon of Dresden was denied and the verdict upheld after he was found guilty in 2023 of 31 counts of sexual violence, including ten counts of sexual assault, 18 counts of rape and three counts of child endangerment in abuse cases involving three victims.

A decision on Newlon's appeal was announced in a press release from the Muskingum County District Attorney's Office. Newlon was first charged in February 2023 and found guilty by a jury the following September.

He was found guilty of the 31 charges and sentenced to life imprisonment after an investigation found evidence of rape, sexual abuse, escalation of sexual violence and threats against three female victims. The incidents occurred between the ages of 9 and 18, over an 11-year period, from 2012 to 2022.

Earlier this month, judges in Ohio's Fifth District Court of Appeals rejected Newlon's appeal and upheld his life sentence.

The 18 rape cases were all first-degree felonies. The three child endangerment convictions are second-degree felonies, while the 10 counts of gross sexual assault are third-degree felonies.

Muskingum County District Attorney Ron Welch said in the press release, “Our office is pleased with the appeals court's decision. Our office invests a lot of time and effort into protecting children. That hard work and effort resulted in a child molester being sentenced to life in prison.”
