Inspections at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital: December 2023 to May

Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital was reprimanded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health for failing to adequately investigate a patient's complaint of alleged mistreatment by a doctor in March.

The incident was one of two visits by health department inspectors to the hospital, formerly known as Einstein Medical Center, to investigate possible safety issues between December 2023 and May.

Here’s a look at the publicly available details:

  1. March 7: Inspectors accused the hospital of failing to adequately investigate a patient's complaint. In November, a patient with a large bruise on his lower back and buttocks said the injury occurred when “two doctors kicked me last month.” Staff did not investigate the complaint because the patient said it happened a month earlier, according to the inspection report. The injury was documented in medical records and staff ordered a computed tomography (also called a CAT scan) and ultrasound but did not prepare an incident report. The hospital agreed to document and investigate all patient statements alleging abuse and to educate staff on the policy.

  2. April 18: Inspectors investigated a complaint but concluded the hospital was in compliance. The details of the complaint will not be published if inspectors find it to be unfounded.
