Suspect killed after shooting involving NDHP officer early Tuesday morning

Original story, 7:24 a.m..- A shooting and police-involved chase resulted in the death of a 43-year-old Dickinson man early Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, September 3, at approximately 12:45 a.m., a North Dakota Highway Patrol officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the Bismarck Expressway near Washington Street.

The vehicle fled the traffic stop and the trooper pursued the vehicle, which was traveling west on the Bismarck Expressway. A second NDHP trooper and Morton County officers assisted in the pursuit.

After the suspect's tires were flattened by spike barriers, the pursuit ended on I-94 near New Salem and the suspect fired shots at officers.

Two NDHP officers and a Morton County deputy then fired their weapons, resulting in the death of the driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old man. A female passenger was uninjured.

The incident is currently under investigation by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The officers have been placed on leave pending the BCI investigation and review by the Morton County District Attorney, which is standard practice and department policy following a police-involved shooting.
