129 prisoners killed, 59 injured in escape attempt at Makala prison

Kinshasa [DRC Congo]September 3 (ANI): At least 129 prisoners were killed and 59 others injured in an escape attempt from Makala Central Prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital Kinshasa, the government said on Tuesday.

According to the government, 24 prisoners lost their lives from gunshot wounds, while the others died from being pushed or suffocated.

Jacquemain Shabani L, Minister of Interior and Security, shared a post on X and said, “On Monday, September 2, 2024, there was a loss of life and significant damage to property during an escape attempt at Makala Central Prison. On the instructions of the High Hierarchy, I have called an emergency meeting with the heads of the defence and security services.” Elaborating on the death toll, the minister said, “The provisional death toll is 129, including 24 from gunshots after warning, the other victims died from concussion or suffocation. Also, 59 injured were being attended to by the government and there were some cases of women rape.” Shabani also informed that administrative buildings and food depots were damaged in the fire. “The administrative buildings, registry, infirmary and food depots were destroyed by fire.” Assuring that the investigation is still ongoing, the minister continued, saying: “The government is pleased with the return of calm, regrets these tragic events and expresses its condolences to the families of the victims. The investigation is ongoing and the public is being informed.” Earlier on Monday, the government spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Media shared a post on X and informed about the escape attempt from Makala prison. He said: “This is an escape attempt from Makala Central Prison. Security services are on site to restore order and security. The population of Kinshasa is urged not to panic. More details will follow throughout the day.” In particular, Makala prison, the largest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has 14,000 to 15,000 inmates, although it has only 1,500 places. This is not the first incident at the facility. In 2017, more than 4,000 prisoners escaped when gunmen attacked at night, according to Al Jazeera. (ANI)
