Over the past decade, Nigerian Christianity has witnessed the deaths of a number of prominent figures, particularly gospel singers.

1. Osinachi Nwachukwu “Ekwueme”:

The death of evangelist and mother of four, Osinachi Nwachukwu, was one of the most painful. It came at the most unexpected time and left an indelible mark on the country's Christianity.

Osinachi died on April 8, 2022. When reports of her death went viral, it was initially claimed that she died of throat cancer.

However, it later emerged that Osinachi had been attacked several times by her husband.

The mother of four came into the limelight after her song Ekwueme became the biggest gospel song of 2019. Osinachi died at the age of 42.

2. Sammie Okposo “Hallelujah”:

The late Warri-born gospel singer Sammie Okposo is regarded by many within and outside the Christian community as one of the greatest clergymen the country has ever seen.

Sammie Okposo died on November 25, 2022. When the news of his death broke, it shocked the Nigerian Christian community.

It was reported that he collapsed after suffering a heart attack. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead after attempts at resuscitation failed.

For over two decades, Sammie Okposo has been a driving force in the evangelization of the gospel and will always be highly respected.

His most successful songs include Most Wanted 1998, Amazing Grace 2008, Welu Welu 2003 and Naija Praise 2004.

3. Kefee, the Kokoroko Queen:

Another gospel preacher whose death came at the most unexpected time was Evelyn Irikefe Don Momoh, better known as Kefee. The Delta State-born gospel singer was one of the most popular gospel artistes of the early 2000s.

Her energetic performances were so thrilling and captivating that she almost achieved cult status.

Born in Sapele, Delta State to a devout Christian family called Obareki, she is famous for the hits Brahnama and Kokoroko, which featured Timaya, Woruno and Eguono.

She died in the United States in 2014 from a collapsed lung after being in a coma for 15 days.

4. Chinedu Nwadike

Although he may not be one of the most famous on this list, Chinedu Nwadike left this world with his head held high.

Nwadike was a famous Igbo gospel musician known for his many songs including his medley “Oku Gbajie Aka Ji Ngozim”.

He died in 2022 after battling cancer for almost three years. He was married to Sorochi Dora Nwadike for ten years. They originally had three children, but their last child died in 2020.

Chinedu Nwadike's story is a sad one for everyone, but his music endures to this day. His musical prowess was used to praise the name of the Most High and he was greatly loved in Christendom for it.

5. Aduke Gold

Aduke Ajayi, aka Aduke Gold, is the latest addition to the list of Nigerian gospel singers who have died in suspicious circumstances.

Aduke's death caused quite a scandal on social media when it first went viral on August 12, 2024. Yemi Sonde reported at the time that she died as a result of a fibroid surgery.

But her older brother made it clear that she was suffering from cervical cancer and therefore underwent an operation, from which she died.

Aduke Gold was laid to rest on Friday, August 23, 2024. Some of her biggest songs include Adura, Anu Ni Mo fe, Praises and Nitori Ogo.
