The International Mission for Iraqi Elections (IMIE) announced today that it is establishing a team of assessors to conduct a follow-up assessment to its interim report released on December 15, 2005. The team would include two executive representatives from the League of Arab States (LAS), one executive member of the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians and a respected European academic. The team will undertake assessments of the following areas: post-election complaints, political entity participation, and post-election audits conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IECI). The findings of the assessors will be transmitted to the IMIE Steering Committee for review and the Steering Committee will issue a statement soon thereafter. The IMIE released its interim report on the conduct of elections in Iraq on December 15, 2005. The report, which can be found at www.imie.ca, addresses six target assessment areas: legal framework, electoral preparations, voter information and education, pre-electoral complaints procedures, voter registration and certification of political entities. The IMIE followed up with a statement on the Out-of-Country Voting on December 16, based on observations of over 400 international observers in the 15 countries where OCV took place. The OCV statement is available at www.imie.ca. The IMIE has been monitoring vote counting and compilation of results in Baghdad assisted by monitors from countries of the European Union working under IMIE’s umbrella. The IMIE will continue to monitor and assess information as it becomes available and will provide further details and recommendations in its final report.
